Give recipes a use (plus potential pebble sink)

This might not be a super popular suggestion in terms of ease of playing, but I feel that currently recipes are a bit too common for a single use per account kind of functionality. Even more so given the fact that Marvin loves to throw them at our faces every 6 hours.

Additionally, we need more use for pebbles. I don't think I need to go into detail on this, as there are already many suggestions and concerns with more detail and explanation on why the current economy is not healthy. Long story short: we need more desirable pebble sinks.

An idea that popped into my head as a way to kill two birds with one stone is the following:

The actual crafting of an item uses up the recipe. So it's not that you need to learn the recipe once (by applying it to the account) but rather it is an ingredient for the crafting*.

Ofcourse getting only a single craft from an item would be a bit too extreme, but perhaps for material-like recipes (leather strips for example) you can get 25 uses before the recipe breaks, and for apparel you get 5 uses. (Just pulling random numbers out of thin air again, just trying to demonstrate that because materials need to be crafted more often so those recipes should last longer).

Perhaps as you level up in crafting, you'll be able to squeeze more crafts out of a recipe in terms of efficiency or something. And I'm sure Miss Mac could also play some sort of fun and interactive role with this type of functionality.

I reckon prices for some of the recipes might need to be adjusted in this case, and perhaps the stock in the MM should be increased to accomodate for the extra usage as well.

And maybe an additinal feature could be that, once you've learned a recipe once, with some of the right ingredients and some pebbles you can craft a new recipe (so as to not be wholly dependant on the stock of the MM) I guess for the ease of instantly getting the recipe (instead of waiting for the right stock) perhaps the pebbles required to craft the recipe could be slightly higher than the recipe prices in the MM

*This wouldn't go for bonepaste and moonstones for obvious reasons

TDLR:

  • Recipes are not single use and learned forever
  • Instead a single recipe can be used a couple of times before it breaks and a new recipe is required to craft an item
  • Material item recipes last longer than apparel recipes
  • This breakage doesn't happen for bonepaste and moonstone recipes
  • Once a recipe has been used/learned/obtained at least once, you will earn the ability to craft that recipe in exchange for some fitting items and pebbles (to avoid dependance on MM stocking the right things) Crafting the recipe will be slightly more expensive though.
  • Prices and stock of recipes would need to be adjusted to accomodate for this change
  • Leveling up in crafting should award some sort of efficiency to make recipes last longer

So let me know what you think of this idea. Horrible? Promising?

Mmmmm, no support. Mainly for the fact some recipes get pretty expensive (some are 1 mill, I think it's just the gold stuff (other than the chain), so they're deserving of the price) and only getting a few uses out of those just... doesn't sit well with me. I go through the silver wheels pretty fast in the grotto (since I don't exactly have a lot of mithril), and I wouldn't want to have to keep buying it again and again, especially since Marvin likes to also be stingy and make me wait days for a recipe I want. I see you addressed this while I was writing, but still no support. It also kinda doesn't make sense to me tbh.

Honestly I'd rather just Marvin not be able to give out free recipes, especially since I do believe he either only gives out the cheap ones, or it's extremely rare for him to give out any higher than 10-20k. Since you can only use one... why can he give you free ones? The copper recipes are a bit common yes but I feel this isn't the way.

@Stellori thanks for your input. I did include the fact that both the price of in the MM would need to be adjusted to accomodate for this and the recipes should be craftable once you've used it at least once to not be dependant on what the MM stocks. Since those seem to be your two main worries, would it still be undesirable in your eyes if those two things were implemented?

As for Marvin not giving out free recipes. I'm not sure if that would fix it. We wouldn't, as individuals, have doubles anymore, but then still the entire department of the MM becomes obsolete for each player within a matter of weeks once they've bought all the recipes themselves..

LOL Seems like you edited while I was writing a reply. Got it, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

No support from me either. It doesn't make sense to me to forget a recipe, and gathering materials for them is a pain enough. Then again, I'm a new player and don't have the pebbles to sink into something like that anyway. An alternative, if you really want a pebble sink, is to have pebbles be part of the recipe like flight rising does.

All a breaking recipe adds is a contrived gameplay inconvenience. In real life, if you had a recipe for food that you used frequently enough to destroy it or make it illegible, you would remember it well enough to make another copy of it so this mechanic doesn't really make sense in that way, either.

All our recipes are currently pre-learned or bought from the MM. This feature is too artificial and inconvenient of a pebble sink. Sure, people want and need to use recipes, but this is adding a very frustrating-sounding complication to crafting rather than adding pebble sinks over time as new items get introduced.

I would like recipes to be available via the campaign since I already don't like that you have to buy them or hope you get them free.

Crafting also already needs items to use, some of which are quite hard to get. Making all the recipes cost pebbles for more than a one-time purchase for a recipe sucks even more than having to buy most of the recipes.

I would support a different use for excess recipes though. Maybe you could give them to Miss Mac and she could be inspired to make a random item or maybe paper origami collectable trinkets or something?

Also no support here. Some of those cheaper recipes can be den sold for funds if you already have them. I'd rather have a trade in store.
