Paint.NET is a great one for simple edits, cropping pictures and the like, i use it religiously for resizing and cropping. It's also great for pixel art because it's simple and you can zoom in neatly so close to the canvas. However, I started digital art on paint.net and let me tell you, while you can draw with it, and there's effects certainly effects you can use, it's very much a baby's-first-art-program and you should move away from it for general digital art once you're comfortable with how to use effects and your stylus. I haven't drawn an actual picture on it in years beyond some ms-paint-esque quick diagrams of stick figures in scribbly locations so i can explain to people what i'm describing.
@officiallytox Thanks for more info about Paint.NET. Probably not something for me then. I've been doing art as far back as I can remember and have been doing stuff digitally for, at the very least, five or six years now. I'm also very comfortable with my stylus and tablet. And as I'm not too big into pixel art, as I don't quite have the patience for it, I want something that is a bit more than just something that can do edits and the like. I want something I can actually use to draw with, make brushes, and get back into doing what I have enjoyed all my life.
My husband goes back to work after being on a two week vacation and I am definitely going to be trying several that I thought looked quite similar to the feel and setup of PS. I'm sure I will find a program out of all of these that I'll enjoy. Thanks to everyone who has suggested something and given information on their favorites and programs they tried. This has been very helpful while I also did a bit of research of my own. Can't wait to start experimenting. :D
