I personally use ibisPaint! Not very good for laptop, but definitely good for tablets/phones. Used it for free for years, and it was amazing!

@FourLeaf

Ok, a lot of helpful tips and information here. I will look into this as well. It doesn't really have to mimic PS, I suppose. Just really looking for something that I enjoy using. Free is always a good thing too, as I don't have much funds with having to pay back my college loans. I will be sure to add Medibang Paint on my list to try. Thank you for suggesting it! :D

Edit: Oops didn't see you there, @TmstrBlmstr
Thanks for sharing. Not sure if I will give this one a try since it doesn't seem laptop friendly, but it's good to know about regardless. Who knows. One day I may use a tablet or something. Not sure if I could ever use a phone though. I already hate being on my phone a lot. xD

@Eindride

I've also heard good things about Clip Studio Paint. And it seems to have a free trial as well. Looks like I'm going to be busy trying out so many new programs within the coming weeks. Thank you! xD

Honestly, I used to solely use MSPaint and GIMP when I got into digital art, but then I bought Clip Studio Paint (Manga Studio) when it was on sale back in, like, 2016? I've been using it ever since. I think they have a subscription model now for newer customers, but you might be able to just get a permanent license for more, I'm not sure. They always have a few sales a year where you can get it half off, usually around Cyber Monday, Chirstmas, and I think maybe one other sale around . . . now, actually. It might've ended already, though. But yeah, it's my favorite art program I've used. Others I've downloaded to try I usually uninstall shortly after because I don't like how the tools operate compared to CSP.

@GraveGuardian

I was looking at that earlier after Eindride suggested it. It seems they have both a monthly/yearly sub option and a way to buy a permanent license. Though, of course, a permanent license has a heftier price tag depending on what you want. Really think if I enjoy it enough I'd be willing to pay for the Pro license as I feel like the EX version of the license has features like animation and 3D rendering I just wouldn't ever touch. As much as I would love to learn to animate. xD

This has all been really helpful everyone! I have a nice list to try and a couple I am really a bit excited to delve deeper into. This has really brought me out of my Krita funk. Thank you!

I second SAI and Fire Alpaca! If you buy SAI for the $50, you'll get access to SAI2 for free and that's been a life saver for me personally.

Paint Tool Sai 2 (Yes, the 2! It's a sequel!) is a good program, I use Clip Studio Paint but I used to also use Sai to remove crunchy white pixels around my lines, unfortunately I don't have access to sai anymore. On my tablet I use Ibis Paint, but in my opinion, clip is the best program.

I electively chose not to read the other comments to see if these programs have already been suggested, i just wanted to be included. u_u

Paint.NET (link because it's annoying name, it's named like a link but the link doesn't go there xD)
Artweaver (while we're at it)

FireAlpaca is great too, I like it even better than Photoshop for some works. Paint.net is better for photoediting and artweaver feels like a very early version of photoshop

@Fosse & @officiallytox

Sai is definitely one of the top of my list to try. Thank you both for suggesting it and also giving your input about it. Even if they have been mentioned, I like knowing what others find useful about it.

I have tried Artweaver very recently, and even had high hopes for it, but the lack of an actual lining brush (like even the ones I edited and tweaked, always had crunchy, pixelated lines no matter the size of the brush) really bummed me out. I played around with it for about an hour and a half and decided it wasn't for me. I will keep Paint.Net in mind though, as that is a new one. xD

But also hearing some really great things about FireAlpaca from y'all. xD
