What happens if I release a wolf? I've been noticing that almost every pup I sell ends up getting released, which makes me really upset. Why do people do it?

You get rewards for releasing— if you don’t want them released, sell for higher or don’t sell them.
Releasing a wolf to explore is basically just removing them from the game pool, so wolves can A- Retain value and B- keep the game from becoming stale. It's a necessary part of the game.
What I suggest is naming them, and then releasing them yourself if it upsets you? At least then you can tie it into your lore.

Right now there are a number of problems with this game. Number 1 is the severely bloated amount of wolves. More and more people are buying to release so if you want to lower that chance, price them at minimum 15-20k pebbles or 1 ms. It's no guarantee but will put off most casual releasers.
Selling Ace flag wolves! Bargain price!
Releasing a wolf at Level 1 gives you 1000 pebbles, and the first wolf you release each day gives you 1 event ticket toward rewards in that week's event shop.
Releasing a wolf that has been leveled gives you an additional 1000 pebbles per level to a max of 10,000 pebbles per wolf; Level 10 wolves also get you a knucklebone token toward using in a Wild Wolf hunt.
So if you are selling wolves at 1000 pebbles or less, many players go to the FM and grab the first cheapest pup they see to release for an event ticket, for example.
The answer is to offer your wolves in the FM for higher than the release bonus. Although any player who has purchased a wolf can release it any time they want, so if you never want any released, keep them :)
I'm finally understanding why ppl keep releasing my pups-

Thanks for the info!

I've noticed people buying wolves lately and immediately releasing them. It makes no sense as they were pups and unlevelled? They were also bought for more than 1000 pebbles. Anyone know why people would do this when there are hardly any profits for them?
It's so odd. I remember I sold a wolf called Cotton Candy for 1050 pebbles to stop them from getting released, and a few hours later, the pup had sold- and gotten released. Maybe it was to get the event ticket thing.

There are a few reasons for these to happen.
One (mentioned by others above) is that once a day you can release a wolf and get a festival ticket, so many people will just grab the first wolf they see on the FM to release for the ticket. Even if it's over 1000 pebbles. It is insanely easy to recoup that cost. Just do a few activities and boom, you've made well over 1000 pebbles, no skin off your back.
The other big one is that right now there is a raffle being held, and to get tickets you give wolves to the raffle owner who will then release them. Some wolf breeds are worth more tickets than others. My fiancé is also a little sad because he named a bracc he sold, only for it to get renamed to an acronym for the raffle. So now he's going to release the parents because he hates seeing that acronym in the offspring list that much. He didn't realize that selling even above the fodder floor would result in his wolf being renamed and released, since his wolf suddenly had way more value as a bracc than he thought. He's learned his lesson now and won't make the same mistake again.
Sadly it's just a part of the game. Once a wolf is sold, anything that happens is fair game. You have relinquished control. It's fine to be upset about it, I too get upset when a wolf is named something that's clearly not a real name, but I've solved that by just releasing my own wolves. That way I ensure they don't end up with names I don't like. Right now is an especially wolf-release-heavy time, I've noticed the fodder floor has remained above 1,200-1,500 pebbles when usually it hovers around 900-1000.
There's just way too many wolves for the amount of people who play and den space available, so many are going to be released. Once people have been able to save up moonstones for the insane den costs, people will be able to be less picky about which wolves they keep. Every expansion goes up by 10 moonstones so getting the last few will take you MONTHS to collect if you're a ftp player like many are, which means even less moonstones to actually buy the wolves you want.

@foxriddles Ah, thank you for the explanation. This makes a lot of sense. A lot of my pups were named chaos and immediately released, I guess for the same reasons you said above.
