Clouds drifted like a herd of woolback bovius, spanning far into the distance from east to west. Almost unmoving against the steadily drifting sun. Hot and melting, only cooling against the moist woodland gloom.
Solaris rolled over from his back and his ears lazily scanned the area. He heard nothing or rather more likely, he didn't wish to. But curiosity still overtook his mind. Sneaking a peek back at the young pack, which he joined just a few days ago, he took note of where everyone stood. A quiet but quirky pack with him, the lead pair digging a den and one other kit, Nikita who-wait, where was she?
"Was this an order." She leaned her forepaws on the rock where Solaris should have stood watch.
Her wrinkled face was rather close to Solaris' until he sprang back up into a proud sitting position. "It was not."
"Thought so," she grumbled, turning around and making her way back to the home turf. "No slacking, remember!"
"Aye miss," he barked back, snorting a hot puff and looking away in shame.
Why do they even need a guard? He thought to himself. It was just the four of them and too much work keeping the border marked, tilling the ground and going on hour-long hunts! So why waste time on keeping someone on watch when everyone has a pair of working eyes, ears and a sniffer to boot?
Gah! He could feel Nikita's cold stare. Better to just stand tall and proud, present to actually look out for danger.
But there, if only for a moment, he heard something out there. Turning to face it, his attention was sold.
