As one who has only looked to buy G1's on FR for years, I'm am totally clueless when it comes to figuring out what generation a pup is in some circumstances. I know the obvious ones like G2 and easily notable G3s, but how do you classify a pup with grandparents and great grandparents that are all over the place? I mean, at that point is it even classifiable and worth it?

Sometimes I can determine a pup is a Gen 4/Gen 5 at the max, but once grandparents start splitting up lineage I just can't tell anymore. When you go through the lineage do you stick to only the females on the mom's side and only the males on the dads side, or do you go through every since ancestor?

For example, I found this pup but I can't figure out how to classify it with so many different generation ancestors. Winter #137303

Since being here on LW this is the first time I actually cared lol so I'm just curious on how you Gen2+ collectors usually handle it ^^

If im getting non-WWs its because I'm trying to make a breeding pair (my favorite thing i did on FR) so I absolutely don't care about generation in that regard. Though, I still like seeing what generation they are for reference, and I click through both their parents to get an idea for it but it's going to get to a point where generations will be impossible to track, just like on FR, and they won't matter

I personally look at every single ancestor but if they're more than 4th gen, I file them as "whatever gen" and they get the same label as mixed gen wolves. I could have a pure 9th gen somewhere but I'd never care enough to prove it. >.<

That makes sense ^^ so with ancestors of all types of generations they're just classified as mixed gen. Definitely not worth confirming a pure 9th gen X3 I appreciate the answer!

Usually I think for generations, you look at all the ancestors, and you take the highest generation. However, eventually, the line will go so far back that it would be a LOT of work if you wanted to figure out what gen your wolf is.

I think your boy there is g6, if I counted correctly.

For Winter, on the mom's side, Cindy is a g4, because the parents of Cindy are very noticeably labelled g3 and g2, which makes life a lot easier. I did go back and double check, but having the gen already indicated makes remembering a lot easier.

Ash was a lot more complex on his dad's side. Ash's mom Orchid is a g2 so that was quite simple. Navy's mother is g3 iirc and the father is a g2, making Navy (Ash's father) a g4. Ash would therefore be a g5, and since g5 is greater than g4, Winter would be a g6 (after his father) rather than a g5 (after his mother).

I'm glad it helped! Especially since LW is relatively new, I really like going back and checking what gen my wolves are since that is feasible to do right now. Maybe not so much in the future XD

Edit: Apparently one of Winter's ancestors placed 1st on my pageant! I saw the bracchus and I was like "that looks familiar" and sure enough, I encountered it not too long ago while going through your pup's ancestors.

For real X3 I figured now of all times would be good to figure out gen numbers while ID's are still relatively low!
