Oh my! I had one wolf encounter but they didn't want to be my friend :<, but it was very exciting. I'm now also hoping to befriend many wolves. Is there a secret to knowing if to bark a greeting or wag tail or is it alll RNG xD

Bark/Wag is just flavor text! Doesn't matter which you choose. ^^

If you're specifically looking for the befriend wolf encounter in explore, it's best to use just one wolf to explore as more than one definitely eats through your food quickly! I also recommend getting into the farming profession as soon as possible as you'll be able to keep up food stocks with that one once you get going in it.
