Wheel breaks after one mining trip

I equipped a Mithril wheel in the Growling Grotto and sent my wolf back to the furnace. Immediately after my wolf reached the furnace, the wheel broke. I'm a bit upset since it took me awhile to get enough bars to make it, and now it's completely gone :")
