Reviving this thread, even though it's been acknowledged, because this still very much keeps happening to me, randomly, on any page.
But also to add to it: A somewhat different thing happens with the familiar bonding. When the familiar bonding overlay breaks, it refuses to shrink the various avatars and item icons, so they're all lined up, one on top of the other, too big to see more than maybe two at a time. It's really hard to see what I got from it because of this. It's not the most horrible thing ever, but it's definitely annoying. And usually refuses to dispose of the resulting dark overlay, but not always.
Everything else, it seems normal until the dark overlay won't leave. Darn clouds, blocking my sun. :(
Edit: Actually, different, so I'm adding it as a sub-note: You can do multiple overlays at once (collecting two or more farm plots at once, for example), and then you have extra dark that refuses to leave unless you refresh. But that one's my fault, for being impatient.
