I've been confused by players who approach this website and the devs with the cynicism of long-time neopets users. it's been like two months and already the first major update was to address the issue players were most vocal about, and then to change it again immediately upon receiving backlash so that players are largely satisfied with it now.
it's a hard line to balance between placating the players - most of whom are focused only on their own immediate enjoyment - and trying to prepare for the long-term economic consequences of balancing changes. it also takes time to program and plan. changing upgrades from moonstones to pebbles sounds simple until you remember that there would also need to be some kind of script in place to refund already purchased upgrades or else there would be more outrage, and from paying players specifically. the knucklebone update was very fast turnaround time after launch and the subsequent rebalance was literally the same day! compare this to how the neopets team has been stringing players along on the promised uc pet update for over two years now with little to no communication (I know tnt is a low bar - but still!)
I think the devs and our new community manager are doing very well so far, and I think the game has an incredibly solid foundation. arena is genuinely the only time I've actually enjoyed currency-earning petsite gameplay rather than considering it a chore I have to do to make my creatures pretty. custom apparel is brilliant cannot say enough about how much I love this! i like that there are tasks for people who want to pay more active attention (mining and fishing) and tasks for people like me who would rather hit a few buttons and come back hours later (farming and hunting). the ui is beautiful and equally responsive on mobile and pc, the art is nice and the varying wolf designs are great. all around it's clearly a passion project made by virtual pet site enjoyers who have figured out what they really wanted out of these sites.
I was around for dappervolk launch (and beta) and that site was fundamentally marred from the beginning by unfun gameplay and a terrible gacha system. this site has none of those issues and the main problem is economy balancing, which is in large part a consequence of newness and can be smoothed out with more content and time.
anyway tl;dr: I have a ton of hope for this site and I absolutely think we will see it continue to improve and grow. I'm glad to have been here at the beginning!
