One of my big loves in the animal kingdom actually come from the marine realm. Octopuses! They're such silly little guys and they have a big place in my heart. My favorite of the genus is the giant Pacific octopus <3 Sharks are also very close to my heart, and if I had to pick a favorite it would be great whites hands down (although I also adore hammerheads.)

Other than that, I have too many favorites to list, hehe. But a really special one are the sea wolves from the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada. Their semi-aquatic, piscivorous lifestyle is fascinating.

Can't name my favorite without at least mentioning my top 5

In order, #1-5: Dogs, Horses, Betta fish, Snow Leopards, and Capybaras

Dogs are my favorite animal for the following reasons:

1. Highly adaptable; both large scale throughout the thousands of years of domestication and small scale in how they adapt to a variety of living conditions

2. Incredibly empathetic; new studies in cognition and behavior show that dogs are capable of affective empathy. Dogs are able to not only smell(!!) emotions (they can pick up the different hormones in our sweat) they also have the ability to understand basic vocabulary (similar to that of a 2-3 year old toddler).

3. Species diversity: there are over 300 different recognized breeds worldwide. From the tiny, delicate Papillion to the majestic Borzoi; from the stocky furry Chow chow to the delicate hairless Peruvian Inca Orchid, there are so many wonderful dog breeds, each with their own unique and fascinating histories.

4. Near limitless potential: Seeing eye dogs, loyal best friend, guard dogs, police dogs, emotional support dog, psychiatric service dogs, cardiac/seizure alert dogs, therapy dogs, protection canine, exercise buddy, a part of the family, swimmer, hunter, tracker, retriever....dog can do so many different things!!!! And each dog is wonderfully unique, both from a 'nature' perspective and a 'nurture' perspective.

There are many many many more reasons, but i'll stick with these as my top 4!!

Spiders. I never HATED them, but I was pretty freaked out by them for most of my life. The pandemic hit, and there was a point in time where I was very bored, so I decided it was time to start learning more about spiders to hopefully get over my fear.

Fear turned into fascination, and eventually I started keeping spiders, mostly tarantulas. I have a little under 20 right now, all different species. A few of them have matured male recently, so I'll be getting more babies soon to recoup from the projected losses.

Thylacines were pretty rad.

My favorite non-extinct animal would have to be bunnies or spiders. They're differently fluffy and adorable.

@Lyka Oh I agree!! The patterns on their thighs are amazing, I'm happy we at least have photos of them.

Penguins. I don't even know why, honestly. The most real-life experience with a penguin I've ever had was at the zoo. I just think they're really cute and silly. Different kinds of canids are also a favorite, I own cats but I'd love to have a dog someday.
