Why commas were added to prices?

Hello,

As said in the tittle, why were commas added?

It makes prices less clear.

Before you could clearly see a price was, for example, 300 000 pb, but now it looks like it's 300 pb or more exactly 300,0 pb. The writing was, not perfect but, pretty good before. The first time I went to the MM today, I was surprised the prices dropped that much and why so many decimal 0 were needed. I thought it was a bug, but apparently it's on purpose.

I'm not sure if we're seeing the same thing?

This is what my recipes look like.

Which seems pretty clear to me-

300,0 wouldn't be accurate… Wouldn't it be 300K or 300,000?

Unless there's regional differences. I'm actually not sure. I was just curious how it was displayed for you.

I find this to be way clearer and easier to see :)
And I've noticed before that when you reach over 10k pebbles in your inventory /possession then there will be a comma to indicate if you have 10,2k or 10,5k pebbles, so making the MM match was a great QOL in my opinion :D

@DerpFox Hi! It's meant to make the prices easier to read.

I get it can still be a little confusing though, because in some languages a comma is added to indicate decimals, and periods are used to make larger numbers more readable. (I'm guessing that's what you're talking about?) But in English commas are used for large numbers and periods for decimals.

So 300,000 would be the same as 300.000 in some non-English languages, not 300,0. Hope this helps!

Most people in America uses commas to visualize differences every three digits. For most people in the United States of America 3,000 will correctly read as 3 000. I was surprised they added commas because it often confuses people from other countries.

Personally I prefer just spaces too because in my opinion causing people from a lot of countries trouble reading numbers is not worth the easier reading. 3 000 does not infer a decimal anywhere to my knowledge and still provides separation between spaces. 3.000 would make Americans think there was a decimal if they had never been exposed to that notation.

Edit: Ocean got posted right before me XD.

Commas for my country is so different from USA's one. Here if you write “30,000 $” It's 30 $ and no decimal.
I personally preferred if they used 30'000 so it's impossible to interpret any other way and makes everything easier to read overall

@Poe I see the same thing. And I think it's a regional difference. Many countries like mine don't use a decimal point but a decimal comma and great numbers are separated by a space. And I thought the only difference was the use of comma or point for decimal, and every one used a space for big numbers.

For example, in your pic I would write :

500 / 1 500 / 5 000 / … / 100 000

On the other end I like the use of “k” for number over 9 999.

Hence, why I was confused at first and had to think a lot to realize what the comma meant, and was thinking it was a bug until I saw the update note.

It's for readability. I suggested this solely because I bought an item for 125k pebbles thinking it was 12.5k pebbles. When there's so many zeroes, it's difficult to count them.

And your suggestion was great. I commend you for that. I think the LW team is not yet used to dealing with an international audience, thus causing confusion.

Yeah I am not sure if there is an all-pleasing solution for this that isn't a personalized user setting that each person can set differently. Because just spaces-only to me isn't helpful, my brain doesn't process the space so the lack of symbols makes it hard to count the 00's ^^; I had no idea there was such variance in what decimals are represented by, very interesting.

Its helpful for people like me, who have dyscalculia, to have some sort of divider on the numbers. Its so easy to confuse the numbers otherwise. A space isn't enough for me either, so a dot or comma is better.
