Why is progression locked behind premium?

Just curious as to why upgrading everything is being locked behind premium currency? :/ I could have sworn in Beta we had more options to upgrade our mining, cooking, nests, etc. with both pebbles and ms? Why is everything now locked behind premium? I thought the beta players already went over this previously with gatekeeping progression behind paywalls, which was why we got the pebbles upgrade tiers? What happened?

In beta it wasn't premium- and It shouldn't be, and I'm worried that this still hasn't been addressed despite many people being unhappy with this change.
