I make my main wolf do all of the work so I only have to funnel food into one place, attention wise. I just use the other bodies for Hunting right now. And looking pretty~
For gathering food, I spend most of my time in the first zone out of Icerun. Lots of food there. The Farm also gives lots of food for minimal attention, esp if you feed snacks to the worker.
Biting the bullet and getting the newbie starter pack in the premium shop helps so, so very much with all the water you get. It's how I grinded through beta. Once you get the level 3 in farming you unlock rice and it gives the best yields in my opinion when you keep everything at maximum.
Also grinding in the map parts that are one or two levels past the starting area can drop decent food if RNG likes you well enough. I've not progressed past Cattle Crossing in Icerun solely to farm the bovius drops because the 3 pack of them drops a lot compared to the drops I got in Goldsea.
I've been in the second? (starts with a Z I think) area in Goldsea farming for wild wolves. It's not a bad source for food, I've gathered up quite a bit of meat and slowly cooking it while feeding my campaigning wolves the insects and stuff I've been getting otherwise (and not feeding my others just as much yet). I still need at least a couple wild wolves before I feel more comfortable since I'd like to have a team of five and another one for hunting. Feh.
The newbie starter pack also helps loads. So much water. And farming is also a good provider, letting that sit in a tab to the side and occasionally checking to maintain the water/compost levels… corn is wonderful. Hail corn.
