Custom Apparel Suggestions

I briefly looked through the other suggestions concerning Custom Apparel and the most recent response on one was last year and it was not entirely something that I supported, so I wanted to have an open conversation about CA in my own thread.

I think custom apparel (CA) is a wonderful idea, I love the artists and the apparel I have seen and I know there was talk about improving the system for re-listing, but I'm more concerned with a different aspect of the mechanic.

Why can we only have 5 apparel to a single Custom Apparel Token (CAT)? The price I believe is fine, the issue I have is with the limit of apparel that is released per single token. My suggestion is to increase that apparel limit per token. Please consider my thoughts below:

  • If only 5 apparel are available per token, every single artist who dabbles in the CA system MUST have the minimum apparel cost be 25MS in order to break even. This does not put into consideration any copies the artist may want to keep for their own lorwolves and dressing plans.
  • If we are correct to assume new apparel that does not consist of a matching crafting recipe only comes around on the few holidays of the site's calendar year, there will be a very small amount of new apparel releases for everyone to dress their wolves and it makes CA one of the only ways to customize our favorites in a meaningful fashion that also takes into account the limited time players have on site daily. (I for one, can only play Lorwolf on Weekends).
  • If this remains factual, that means any artists that would like to sell apparel to a more wider audience of Lorwolf at a lower price than 25MS will come back with a loss of Moonstones. A loss of the Premium currency of Lorwolf, that is difficult to come by even with daily play.

While this sounds fine on paper without a proper delve into the mechanics, one might ask about the other side of the coin; What if someone wants to sell their CA for Higher if this change comes into effect? Would the artist not get significantly more MS if people buy the expensive apparel? Well, yes, but in the end that would be up to the player-base to decide. Artists will decide what to price their custom apparel for, and if the players think this is a fair exchange, that is not for anyone else to decide for others. My suggestion here is simply to allow the artists who want to interact more with the community have more freedom to do so.

I am not saying to generate 100 copies with a single CAT that is submitted and approved, even raising the amount to 10 copies of a CA item would be great for everyone involved in the process. If the artist wants to make a custom apparel a limited run, they can simply keep more copies for themselves and sell further down the line, or just keep for themselves without any repercussions.

There is also the idea of having different kinds of CATs. If someone wants to commission or make a private apparel item, it would be cool to see a token that costs somewhat different and can do that for you. The same for maybe 10-item CATs or other kinds of tokens. There's a lot that can be done and adjusted for the custom apparel system that should theoretically not cost too much grief or disruption to the site as is.

I love the custom apparel system, I think it is an amazing idea to give players more control with what to dress their lorwolves in, but I think the current CAT system works against artists and players in several ways. Though this is a suggestion in a discussion forum, what do others think? Does this seem fair to players, or are there more ideas you want to share? I would love to listen!

I totally agree to the idea of raising the amount to 10 copies per CAT rather than the slots being limited to 5, for many of the reasons that you listed. As someone who was thinking about getting into the CA market to some extent, one of my biggest concerns is spending 100 MS on a CAT, only to have to price each piece at 25 MS+ at the very least just to break even. Not to mention, getting compensated for the labor involved in making a CA would be nice, considering Lorwolf has huge canvases that they expect you to draw on - far larger than the size of something like a Flight Rising skin by comparison!

I have limited wrist energy and wrist pain; the idea of drawing something that massive for so little return is... daunting and discouraging, to say the least, because if I raise the price too high, it gatekeeps the casual player out of being able to enjoy what I've created, and that's disappointing and sad to me admittedly. I would like to be able to set a price that's easier to come by, because 25 MS takes several days of devoted gameplay to actually achieve. Not everyone has the time to spend on Lorwolf all day! Many of us are adults with other priorities! (And I firmly believe that you shouldn't have to pay to play something!)

Since Lorwolf's on-site and official / non-user-generated cosmetics are lacking and become repetitive after you've been playing for a while, CAs are the majority of how you can truly customize one of your wolves, and there are 16 apparel slots total - we're looking at a baseline of 25 MS per slot, at that. And its very cheapest, that is 400 MS per wolf that you want to deck out! That's a lot. That's more than a casual player could reasonably make. Let's compare that idea to lowering a MS cost to 10 MS per slot - then it becomes only 160 MS by comparison. That's still a lot, but it's far more reasonable, and it can be achieved easier.

Increasing just how many slots per CAT alone would help this issue, and give artists the freedom to price at a range that they want to instead of forcing a 25 MS minimum. I think it would balance some things - and this is just my personal opinion, so take it as you will - and help spread CAs out to a greater, wider audience of players. One of the things that makes a petsite truly thrive is drawing in casual players, not just intense players, or those who can indeed pay-to-play. Because having more people on the site means that the economy will better balance itself out, rather than being weighted towards only those who have a lot of funds to devote to it. A larger economy means more sustainability in the IRL currencies side of things as well, because it generates more people to trade with, swapping currencies around, that kind of thing. (We also desperately need more pebble sinks to help with this.)

But something like this would be an excellent step in that direction, and it'd be very simple to change / adjust, as well. It's literally just changing a number (from 5 to 10 alone), which would make a lot of difference. Massive support for this idea.
