Purpose of stoking the fire?

The tutorial in mining doesn't say what it does, nor in the guide linked. I'm assuming it might be like the wheels/pickaxes in that it speeds smelting up, but can't find information if that is the case.

Can I get a confirmation from someone, or an explanation of what it does if not that?

Stoking was in a small mining update, hence why it’s not in the tutorial (but it should). Stoking changes the number of ore you need to make a bar from 5 to 4 for the next 6 bars. Early on, it’s not super important, but later when you are mining gold, it’s nice to save one gold ore by stoking the furnace.
