Agree. While I can understand appealing towards Discord because current state of LW forums are lucklaster, that I had no idea why taking out our rather small community out of the site. It was just harmful for the site.
But honestly, this is best time to improve forums. In my opinion we especially need 'new posts' category. Searching for new activity in already existing topics is pain.
I both dislike and like* this decision because it alienates part of the community that isn't comfortable with forum posts that can be seen more readily than an active Discord chat and supports the part of the community that has been site-only. I feel like it was a big step to take, and I'm curious what went into the consideration. Also +1 to being able to see "most recently posted on topics" because even finding pages I've responded to recently is a pain when my profile shows 5 at a time.
I was banging this drum the loudest for awhile but I have to agree with these comments that it could have been done more strategically. I had paragraphs on why I felt the official Discord was an ill-fated decision for the longevity of sites both in Lorwolf's case and in cases like Dappervolk.
There's been a large communication disparity, and I think if you're prioritizing on-site vs off-site play, you definitely should focus on on-site endeavors.
That being said, I got a lot of pushback when I was saying this, and the general consensus seemed to be that the forums were just not up to par with the quality of communication Discord provides. I agree that these forums are lackluster in UI and UX, and so that developed my opinion into the forums should get more attention in general.
I wish we could have gotten some sort of lip service at least that they're aware of this, and intend on tackling the forums even if it's not immediate.
Well I digress! I think it's a great thing to have more opportunity for organic Discords that are user-run. Players always need a populated space without mods breathing down their necks.
If you're upset that the discord is shutting down, please make your own! The time is now!
Edit: as an aside, I haven't seen the forums this active in awhile and that's exciting!
Oh wow I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is delighted to see the official discord shut down!
Honestly I lot of my love for the site was hanging out with the community chatting while playing and how sudden this was really feels like just ripping all of those bonds and community away, and I like using forums! I don't really like the decision but I don't disparage it, I understand why it was made; it just feels so sudden like others have said, as if all of that time and community built in the discord doesn't matter.
I understand that that's not the case, I fully comprehend that; that's just how it comes across to me as someone who loved the discord. I'm sure we'll all build ourselves back up again in unofficial servers and the forums will see more life, it just hurts. :/
There is also a personal factor and I get that; I’ve been under a lot of stress and haven’t been around as much and so didn’t know about the discord closing until a few hours ago, and so in a matter of days everything went from business as usual last I checked in to all of the time spent laughing with friends being thrown out the window like it didn’t even matter with barely even a chance to say goodbye to the community we’d built. And again, I know that’s not what’s happening! It’s just that for me personally it hurts; a lot.
And like I said; we’ll find each other again in the forums and unofficial servers, it just hurts to have it all ripped away so quickly.
