What do gems actually do?

I read the patch note post but didn't see what gems actually did, just that they were added. I have quite a few in my inventory and always need more pebbles, so I was thinking of just selling them. But if they have a cool or important purpose, I might not sell them.

@TmstrBlmstr In the latest Dev Update, gems were added to the mines. They are currently used in the dagger recipes, and more uses are planned to come in future updates.
